The quiet version of toxic masculinity
It is not always loud or violent. Sometimes it is a man who cannot say I love you first. That is the harder version to name.
The loud version of toxic masculinity is easy to name because it is illegal, obvious, or on the news. The quiet version is the one you have to live with.
It is the man who cannot say what he feels until after you have said it first. The one who agrees to therapy and then treats it like a chore. The one whose I'm fine ends every conversation you were trying to have.
None of this is criminal. All of it is corrosive. It is toxic masculinity in maintenance mode — no drama, just a slow erosion of intimacy over years.
You are allowed to name it as a problem even if it does not photograph as one. In fact, if it does not photograph as one, you are the only person who can.
