Toxic masculinity: what does that look like to you?
It is not just the loud version. It is the culture of dominance you were told to admire, adapt to, and eventually become.
The easy version of this conversation is about the men in the news. That is not the version that changes your life. The version that changes your life is the toxic masculinity you absorbed.
It is the belief that rest is laziness. That vulnerability is a liability. That the way to be respected is to be unbothered. That you win by not needing anything.
Women who were unprotected as girls often adopt this as armor. They become excellent at it. They lead teams, run households, out-earn their partners — and they cannot understand why they feel dead inside.
The armor worked. It also became the wall between you and your femininity. You cannot be both fortress and garden. At some point you have to decide which one you are, and let the other one down.
