When your father was absent entirely
The empty chair is not a blank slate. It is a specific inheritance. Name it before you sit down across from anyone.
An absent father does not leave a neutral space. He leaves an active question: what did I do? That question does not disappear in adulthood. It just gets projected onto every man who ever gets close enough to leave.
Fatherless daughters often either avoid intimacy entirely or over-invest, over-fix, and over-perform to keep the man from doing what her father did.
Neither is her fault. Both are still costing her.
The work is to grieve the man who did not stay so that you can stop auditioning for the ones who did. You do not owe every man an audition. You get to be chosen calmly.
